ANSWER FOR MAN’S ANXIETY

TOPIC: ANSWER FOR MAN'S ANXIETY

TEXT: Psalms 37:1-40

MEMORY VERSE: "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." Ps: 37:5

CENTRALTRUTH: Faith in God is the antidote for anxiety

INTRODUCTION
Have you ever asked the elderly what their most significant observation about life had been. Their answers would be fascinating. The host of experiences that a person has in a lifetime, particularly the difficult times, help form overarching statements about life. David looked back over his live and made an encouraging observation in Ps. 37:24, "though he (the good man) fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with His hands." Many become perplexed and anxious becaus the pressures of life. Sometimes even God's people are put to severe test. However, those who have walked the path of life with God have found Him faithful. Those who trust God and commit their ways to Him are never ashamed.

1. TRUST IN THE LORD: Psalms. 37: 1-8
Maintaining proper attitudes and coping with the emotions that come when one sees the undeserved prosperity and success of the wicked can sometimes be a hard task. When some people see the wicked prosper, they often feel anxiety, anger, and wrath - the results of "fretting' (v8). These can only lead to other evils. Read verse 1, 8; Pro.23: 17;24. 19,20
Significant promises are available to those who make God their object of desire, their sole source of joy and happiness. Delighting in the Lord opens the way for answered prayers (v4), Jn. 15:7. Those who have wholly committed themselves to God will not pursue desires that are contrary to His will. Faith applied to desires based on God's will will see answer.

2. WAIT FOR GOD'S JUSTICE: Ps. 37: 9-19
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus cites Ps. 37:11 in Matt. 5:5. Only the meek will receive the inheritance reserved for the just. Meekness towards God acknowledges a genuine dependence on his grace, goodness and person. When this translates into a lifestyle, such a person's life wholly honours God and conforms to His will. This is the man described as a righteous man. (Ps. 37:16; Pro. 15: 16; 16:8). See also Romans 8:28

3. ACKNOWLEDGE GOD'S PROVISION: Ps.37: 23-26
Those whose manner of living is built on biblical standards and priorities will have chosen a course of life with which God is pleased. This is what qualifies people to receive blessings. The most important characteristics that would identify a "good man" are the decisions such a person makes which are supported, made firm, and established by the Lord. This is what"ordered" steps refer to in v. 23
Some specific ways God will support Christians in crisis might include spiritual strength through prayer; divinely imparted peace, wisdom, joy or friends lending a hand in a variety of physical, emotional, spiritual, or material ways.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
1. What major temptations can confront a Christian who strives to advance in a career or volunteer
position?
2, How can we know ifour prayer is pleasing to God?
3. In you own language explain how you understand Ps. 37.11
4. What specific avenues of support might God use to uphold those who fall?
